What was the English-Speaking Club of Malaga?

The English-Speaking Club of Malaga (ESCM) was originally a small social club,

founded in 1971 by nine friends of various nationalities living in Malaga City who, due

to their different mother tongues, chose to speak together in English. This circle of

friends grew over the years attracting interest from international and local residents

who wanted to socialise, to get to know and understand other cultures, to speak

English and to share social relationships in a friendly and respectful atmosphere.

How did the ESCM function in the past?

In previous years the ESCM held 2 meetings per week of which one meeting was an

‘English language only’ talk and discussion organised by a committee of volunteer

club members. The other meeting was an informal get together at a local hotel

where club members gathered to improve their English or their Spanish. The club

also hosted several lunches each year.

How do we function now?

These days we no longer have ‘English language only’ meetings or events, neither

are we an English/Spanish ‘intercambio’ (language exchange). Instead, we are an

International multi-lingual social group.  Our members hail from over 25 different

countries, and the languages spoken number more than that.  Fifty years on and life

is different, yet our values remain the same: international friendship, cultural

understanding, tolerance and respect. Of this we are very proud.

Where and at what time is the meeting?

Meetings take place on Fridays at the ICON Hotel Malabar in Soho, Calle Tomas

Heredia 11-13, in the cafe /bar area from 6.30pm. Just come and introduce

yourselves and you will be made very welcome.

We meet between October and June (except public holidays). There are no

meetings in July, August or September.

Our language for general communication is English but attendees are welcome to

engage in conversation in any language during the meetings.

There is no membership fee but everyone attending a meeting should please buy at

least one beverage/drink at the hotel bar.

We look forward to meeting you.
